Addicted to Your Phone? Get this App!
Are your kids addicted to social media? Are you? They say the average person is on their phone 2-4 hours a day. That’s a lot!
According to Social Media Today, “Currently, total time spent on social media beats time spent eating and drinking, socializing, and grooming.”
I’m going to be honest and admit to a little phone addiction. I pick up my phone when I’m nervous or bored. I love posting pictures on Instagram and making videos on Facebook. (It’s more about my attempt at connection than it is vanity.)
We’ve allowed social media to become our source of connection and it’s not fulfilling. But I reach for my phone anyway. We all do.
Now, I do have good boundaries around my phone, which I encourage everyone to adopt. The first and best rule is “no phones in bed.” That’s it.
In order to look at your phone, you have to get out of bed. This will help you sleep better, it will allow your brain and your eyes to wake up more gradually, and it creates a more peaceful morning.
To take my phone boundaries to the next level, I’ve recently discovered an app called Moment. It simply keeps track of how much time you spend on your phone. That knowledge is enough to change behavior.
Here’s my first week using Moment, compared to my second week.
Knowing how much time I spent on my phone definitely lead to a reduction in phone time.
If you upgrade to the premium version, which I did for $4, you can set time limits. For example, I don’t want to be on my phone from 9pm to 6:30am, so I set those limits within Moment. If I pick up my phone to post an Instagram picture at 9:30, Moment buzzes me unceasingly to get off my phone. It’s so annoying that I get off immediately! I love it.
Having good boundaries around technology will help you feel more connected to your real life. It will improve relationships with people around you. And it’s better for your health!
Check out this app, or find another one that you like. I’ll keep using Moment to reduce my screen time and feel more connected. I hope you find some connection too.
