Be Brave with Color
We are surrounded by and are attracted to colors in nature. We associate crimson red with roses, yellow with the warm sun, blue with a cloudless sky and green with freshly cut grass. Many of us want to bring those exciting colours into our homes, but don’t know where to start or are afraid to try.
The current Nordic and Scandinavian trends which are light greys and whites, layered with pastels on white, may not be that practical for some countries where the air is dusty or even where there is so much sunlight which creates glare from white and light surfaces. Also, if you spend a lot of time indoors, not getting the natural play of color thrown into your day may leave your senses feeling a little depleted.
If you are open to the idea of introducing bold colors into your space, it is important to know that using bold colors at home is very much about experimentation in terms of which colors you are drawn to. There are certain colors that will look right in a particular room depending on orientation and the amount of light, but overall when it comes to choosing striking colors, the real driving force is you.
Be brave and trust your instincts, see what colors you are attracted to and how they make you feel. Confidence is definitely key with bold color, and there is nothing to lose as if you don’t like something, you can always change it. As well as adding to space and creating a certain atmosphere, colors have the power to change our mood and lift our spirits. These days, with such a large range of hues and shades available from such a large variety of paint companies, it is easier than ever to have a little fun and add some amazing color to your home.
When making a choice, think about how certain hues make you feel. Living things absorb and reflect the colors around them and some can evoke different moods or emotions, depending on the tone, placement and intensity.
Violet has a calming affect on our bodies. It has also been proven to suppresses our hunger, helps us to cool down and is even known to have antiseptic and purifying effects.
Red is certainly a bold colorr! Throughout everyday life it signifies love, danger, pain and heat and can help us to feel warmer, but too much can contribute to feelings of anger.
Yellow, which makes us think of the warm sun is certainly a mood lifter. Creative, natural and warm, yellow is an energising and motivating color.
Green instantly makes us think of nature, trees, big leaves and the great outdoors. Depending on the shade, green can be rejuvenating, energising or relaxing! Green has also been proven to relax our eyes simply, just by looking at it.
If you aren’t sure which color to choose or prefer to experiment first, try styling or paint testing in a room which you don’t use all the time. If you’re feeling confident or want to add even more strong or eye-catching hues, upholstered accent chairs or large colorful rugs will instantly transform your space. You can also test your ideas with art, rugs and wall hangings. Choosing artwork which means something to you is important, but it is also a great medium to highlight some of your favorite and most loved colors in a more subtle way.
As your bedroom is a more private area, it is a great place to test colors that inspire you. Bright bed linens and throws can be a great place to test ideas. This will give you a low cost and fun way to explore color combinations that bring you joy and make you feel a certain way.
Remember that colors do not need to be limited to block or solids. Look out for amazing patterns, embellished fabrics and textured surfaces in bold colors to add personality and interest to your home. Once you have a few colors and patterns that you feel are working together, try to compliment, match or contrast with other items such as curtains or cushions.
Using color as an accent is a great way to get started with more bold or brighter colors. Injecting vivid colours into a space with soft furnishings, such as throws, cushions and curtains will help you start to feel more relaxed with how they look in the space. Considering colors which are personal to you, will also help you to feel more confident with the color choice you make. Think about your favorite colored clothes or even food, and begin to play with colors which mean a lot to you. As your confidence grows, so will your love for bold color.
