Fall in Love with Your Home Again
Think about the last time you really cleaned out your kitchen cupboards or wardrobes one by one and washed every item and reviewed whether it was still required in your life? What if you organized every section of your home with love, thoughtfulness and care, just as though it was a body that you and your family lived in?
As life takes over our daily tasks we can forget that our home, like our bodies is working hard to help us live out our best life. Our homes protect us from the cold, shelter us from the heat and allow us to live in peace and privacy to raise our families, read our books, sleep, play and rest.
Often years can go by as we ignore our surroundings before we decide to change things up or fix things that are broken. Often, we just make do until things get so out of hand we can’t deal with them anymore. If we have a cracked tile in the bathroom we may ignore it for as long as we possibly can before it causes us a problem or we finally replace or fix it.
Life gets so busy, there are more pressing items that need our attention, shirts need ironing, bills need paying and children need dressing. The spaces around us can support our daily tasks or they can add to frustration and disorder. What if we saw our home as an aid that could help make daily tasks easier, more helpful or even delightful?
What if our homes could add pleasure to the mundane tasks or the daily life hustle and bustle? What if just a few small tweaks could bring exponential joy to our days?
Here are just a few ideas that will help you fall in love with your home and bring back the little joys into your life.
Fall in love with doing the washing
Having a practical and pretty place that functions well for laundry is almost essential in our modern lives although many new homes can ignore the necessity for a laundry room or utility completely.
Whether you have a laundry or even just a cupboard think about incorporating even a few of these into the space and see how it can change your perception of undertaking this task:
Organise items such as pegs, lines and detergents so that they are all stored in a way that is easily accessible and practical.
Add joy to your day by creating displays with products, using healthy alternatives to chemicals or even by creating pretty storage solutions.
Find a way to store dirty clothes in a practical way that makes washing them easy.
Add natural and fresh smells to your laundry space and clean it often so that it feels fresh every time you need to use it.
If you can afford it, design a beautiful utility room that has gorgeous carpentry, millwork or joinery and see how much joy you receive from opening individual drawers, folding clothing or ironing in a place that exudes quality.
Utility spaces are usually areas where families store many useful but not often used items, therefore finding a way to close off this practical place can create a design opportunity in that area. For example hiding (integrating) washing machines and dryers into cabinetry in a boot room that focuses on a beautiful window seat.
Fall in love with cooking (every meal)
Clean, well organized kitchens are a pleasure to work in and alongside beautiful, fresh food can add so much joy to the simple task of preparing meals for you and your family.
If you are tired of your kitchen but aren’t in a position to update items or overhaul the design, try some of these simple things to fall in love with using your kitchen again:
Clean and organize each cupboard.
Reorganize shelving and items in a way that works better for you, your lifestyle and your family.
Display items you love and use often in a way that is creative or brings you joy. (This could be healthy snacks in pretty jars or hand painted plates from children on the walls).
Remove and or replace items that are old, broken or are due an upgrade.
Deep clean the floor, tiles or refresh the space with a lick of paint.
Include something in your kitchen that reminds you of happiness and good health (this could be a photograph, a recipe book or even a framed motivational quote).
Fall in love with cleaning
Cleaning is often a daily maintenance task that requires small amounts of energy daily and usually a larger length of time for bigger tasks. Whether you have a cleaner or maid to help or not some of these ideas could help bring joy back into daily chores around your home:
Use natural oils and scents that inspire your senses and help you to feel a certain way (motivated, relaxed, inspired or calm)
Use products like gloves and rags that are gentle on your skin and could help moisturize your hands whilst undertaking tasks. This could be a set of gloves that nourish your hands with a mask.
Organize your products into pretty and clean boxes that light you up or make you feel a certain way when using them. This could be a set of matching soap dispensers that give a feeling of elegance or health.
If you are stuck and just want to do the simplest thing to fall in love with any space again, just empty the whole room and just rearrange it with a new eye. Even if you just use the same things again, just place them somewhere different and take some joy in playing with what you have and try to explore the beauty in the space again.
