How to Get What You Want
This week I had lunch with a friend of mine. During our catch up she mentioned how she was hoping for a new job opportunity to come her way. As she told me about this I could hear the excitement build in her voice. Just as I went to share her excitement, she made the statement “Yeah but it probably won’t happen.” I was immediately taken back by this statement and when probed she admitted that she never expects good things to happen to her. Can you imagine going through life with this belief? If so, I want you to read on.
Our beliefs, whether we are aware of these or not, are what create our reality. If you think something good or bad will happen, then there is a much higher chance of this actually coming true versus when you don’t. Why is this case? Because our actions are shaped by our thoughts which are founded on our beliefs.
As we sat there over lunch, I asked her “what if good things could happen and what if this was a result of you actually believing this?”
Our beliefs, whether we are aware of these or not, are what create our reality.
By asking this question, she got thinking about what something “good” would actually look like. This led to her talking about the job opportunity again. By approaching this in a different way, she was able to get excited. Only this time she started to believe this was an actual possibility.
I have always applied a positive mindset in life. Rather than expecting the worse I expect the best. This has not only led to many incredible opportunities but has resulted in creating a life I love and feel connected to.
So how can you go from expecting the worst to expecting the best in your life?
Become aware of your beliefs
When my friend became aware that her default in life was to expect the worst, she was able to change this and focus on the opposite. You can do this by simply looking out for what your default position is. This is likely coming up daily, so once you tune into your thoughts it should be easy to spot. Write your thoughts down and see what theme keeps coming up.
Out with the old, in with the new
When we replace these beliefs with better ones, we start thinking differently, which in turn means that we act differently. If you are sceptical then try an experiment with me. Tomorrow when you wake up, I want to you get up and say out loud that “today is going to be the best day.” Keep saying this out loud as you get ready. On your way to work, keep focusing on this one thought. At the end of the day I want you to reflect on what sort of day it has been. I guarantee you, your day will have changed as a result of this one shift in belief.
Act how you wish to live today
When my friend realised she had the power to start acting differently she not only felt encouraged but she felt empowered. She realised that she did not need to wait and see what happened with the job. But rather, she could start taking action that week by having the conversations to get the wheels into motion. In order to create a different outcome, you need to take different action. Rather than wait for something to happen, you need to act as if it has already happened.
