How to Keep Success Simple
Back to school. Back to work. Back to routines. You’ve come back from vacation with renewed vigor and a sense of “Things are going to be different.” Two days back at work and your eyes are already starting to glaze over with the routine and banality of monthly reporting, meetings, and the idea of school lunch preparation. STOP! Come back from the brink.
In last month’s issue, I asked you to get creative about how you wanted to live and work. (Didn’t see it? Go check it out here). Go back and read everything you wrote that lazy day in summer and connect to it – get that sense of excitement and possibility again about what you created when your mind was wandering in summer.
Now…what is ONE thing you could do this month that brings you closer to the vision you created of how you want to live and work? Keep it simple. ONE thing.
If enjoying more time with your family was part of your vision, you could do one of the following:
Reduce the schedule of meetings each day by one to get home earlier more frequently.
‘Outsource’ making dinner a couple of nights a week to a private chef or housekeeper and spend the time with the family.
Create a plan to negotiate with your boss to work at least one day a week from home, (or even propose you move to working 3 days a week.)
If being in your dream job by the end of the year was part of your vision, you could:
Update your LinkedIn profile and spend 10 minutes each weekday being active on it to increase your visibility.
Reach out to 3 people in your network each week to catch up either for coffee or a phone call to see how you can support each other.
Identify what skills you need to demonstrate to get the job and consciously work towards improving them.
If living a laptop lifestyle is your vision, you could:
Explore how you could support the lifestyle financially, being creative with your ideas (no idea is too crazy!)
Identify a course to re-train in a particular field that interests you that would support your lifestyle vision.
Connect with other global nomads by following them on Facebook, reading their blogs, and reaching out to them to get ideas and to keep the vision alive and tangible.
You see, when you break it down in this way to focus on ONE thing, it takes away the noise, the overwhelm, and the sense that your vision is out of reach. It is SO achievable in bite-sized pieces. In fact, when you start doing ONE thing consistently, it begets more success.
When you show up for yourself and do what is in your control to achieve your ambitions on a consistent basis, the Universe/God/Source/Allah/Spirit does the rest.
Success begets success.
So…what ONE thing will you do this month to bring yourself closer to your vision of how you want to live and work?
