The Importance of a Night-time Routine
We all know the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. It makes us look and feel our best, not to mention it’s our body’s time to repair and heal. But sleep doesn’t always just magically happen for all of us, and that is one of the many reasons why a nighttime routine is so vital to our health and wellness.
I learned all about a nighttime routine from my mother. I watched her every night as a little girl get ready for bed in such an elegant and relaxing way. Even if she was exhausted from a day running after two young girls, she always made time for herself before bed. To this day she still practices this routine, and it shows! Her skin, from her face to her hands, looks fresh and fabulous thanks to this consistency.
I now have my own routine that calms me before bed and best prepares me for the next day, and I’d like to share that with you.
Below you’ll learn all about my top 3 nighttime habits, and from there I invite you to think about what would best serve you on a nightly basis.
A strong nightly skincare regimen is crucial for all ages. And even if you are exhausted after a long day, traveling or didn’t wear makeup that day, you still need to wash your face before bed. Post-face wash I always use a conditioning toner, an anti-inflammatory face oil, followed by a nighttime anti-aging moisturizer and eye cream. Once a week I do a clarifying mud mask to remove impurities, and on the weekends I’ve really been enjoying my jade roller for de-puffing and sculpting. Here is an article sharing more of my favorite skincare tips and products.
Yogi brand Bedtime Tea is one of my favorite ways to relax before bed. While I am waiting for my facial oil to fully absorb into my skin (which is important to do before you apply your moisturizer) I love making myself a cup of bedtime tea to help me continue to unwind, relax and hydrate before bed. Keep a variety of teas on hand with the specific purpose to help you sleep well so that you keep this part of your routine fresh. I’ve found this also helps with my bedtime snack cravings.
Once in bed and sipping my tea, I apply cuticle oil (I love Butter London’s cuticle oil best) to my nail bed and then apply a very rich hand cream all over my hands. The best part of this step is I wake up with hands that look like I just had a manicure!
Other self-care techniques that I often do and you can add into your nighttime routine include taking a relaxing bath, journaling, reading, applying a facemask, using a jade roller, and the list goes on. Don’t feel like you have to do everything all at once as this should be relaxing and not another to do list to tackle.
The more you do this and make this part of your day a non-negotiable, the better you will look and feel, not to mention the better you will sleep.
