A Week of Foolproof Outfits
It can often feel daunting knowing what to wear on a daily basis, little less a special event. And this is one of my favorite topics to help clients with because when you have the perfect outfit to wear for whatever the day brings you can be more present and truly focus on where you are and what you’re doing. No wondering if you’re under-dressed, over-dressed, too colorful, too fussy, etc.
And the number one question I get asked as a Style Coach is “Megan, what do I wear for _____ (fill in the blank: meeting, presentation, baby shower, cocktail party, etc.).”
To give you a little glimpse into my week and how I dress for all occasions, I’ve shared some of my outfits with you below. But this is more than just what I’m wearing. It’s about educating and inspiring you to make sure you have the basics you need in your closet for anything that pops up AND that you know how to style them up to suit your style and silhouette.
My day to day of working with my clients is comprised of a lot of carrying bags of clothes; sitting on closet floors assessing clothes; and driving from a store to a client’s home. Needless to say I need clothes that move with me while also allowing me to look pulled together.
If you can relate to that whether for work or weekend, I encourage you to look for upleveled basics, like my velvet tee and hot pink mules. These more fun, basic and comfy items will help you feel polished and stylish without sacrificing your ability to move and groove throughout your day.
Another day of client appointments means that stylish sneakers are needed for lots of walking and shopping! Thank goodness sneakers are on trend right now, and every designer is making a chic pair.
One of my favorite tricks for looking pulled together without feeling fussy or overly dressed is a third piece that has some stretch to it. This knit blazer is perfect thrown over jeans, but also could be dressed up for a speaking engagement over a dress. Other third pieces to look for include: bomber jackets, denim jackets, vests, leather jackets, and silk blazers.
I often have the pleasure of speaking to various women’s groups, businesses, and organizations to share with them my favorite style tips and tricks. For such occasions, I like to dress to suit the audience, and today I spoke to a group of attorneys. To me this called for a more professional ensemble, but of course with my own personal flair.
Flair in a professional wardrobe often comes in the details, such as a leather skirt, a beautiful piece of statement-making jewelry, or a blazer with great accents.
Today I had a baby shower to attend for a dear friend, so a dress and heels were in order. I personally love using Rent the Runway to be able to rent a fun printed dress for such special occasions. This is especially nice when I know that lots of pictures will be taken and posted to social media. But it’s just as important to have a handful of dresses that make you feel amazing on hand in case something pops up last minute.
I also have my classic black Chanel shoulder bag that literally goes with everything and is perfect for baby showers, luncheons, weddings, and more. Make sure you have a classic, small shoulder bag in your closet for such occasions. It will pull together your look every time.
One of my husband and my favorite weekend activities is exploring all that our city has to offer. Over the weekend we attended a food truck event at our local park. There were countless food trucks, as well as live music, and lots of walking in the hot outdoors!
Even on the weekends I like to look and feel my best, so instead of athletic wear I tossed on a one-and-done casual dress with a pair of slide sandals, and my favorite animal print, calfskin cross body bag. I was comfy, casual, and it took all of a minute to throw it all on and walk out of the door. Having these kinds of basic items on hand is very important to make weekend-wear just as fabulous as your weekday attire.
Now that you’ve caught a glimpse of how I dress for the week and the reasoning behind everything, I invite you to really be more purposeful and thoughtful when planning out your own outfits and when adding new items to your wardrobe. I promise you’ll benefit not only in how you feel but in all areas simply by creating a more streamlined dressing experience.
